Case Mix Programme (CMP)

The Case Mix Programme (CMP) is a national, comparative audit of patient outcome from critical care. Timely case mix and outcome data are collected on consecutive admissions to participating critical care units. These data undergo extensive validation at ICNARC prior to the provision of comparative Data Analysis Reports to units.

The CMP exists as a result of the success of the ICS UK APACHE II Study, a large research study on patient outcomes from intensive care in the UK led by ICNARC's Director, Dr Kathy Rowan, in the early 1990s.

The CMP is voluntary to join but both the Department of Health (in 'Comprehensive Critical Care: a review of adult critical care services', published in 2000) and the Critical Care Stakeholder Forum (in 'Quality Critical Care: Beyond Comprehensive Critical Care', published in 2005) recommend that all units participate.
