Patients / Relatives

ICNARC is committed to providing high quality data analysis and research to help healthcare professionals improve the quality of care they provide in intensive care in the UK.

ICNARC believes that rigorous research into personal experiences of serious illness resulting in admission to intensive care is an important part of this work. Providing access to the experiences of patients, families and close friends who have already come to terms with the realities of intensive care (both during and after the patient stay) may help others.

For this reason, ICNARC has funded two DIPEx website modules investigating both patients' experiences and the experiences of family and close friends. DIPEx is a charity and research group based at the University of Oxford. The DIPEx web site has won several high profile awards and commendations, regularly features in the media as an example of good information on the Internet and is a recommended resource for BBC health features.

The following pages are intended as an information resource for patients, relatives and friends wishing to find out more about intensive care.
