Personal experiences of intensive care
ICNARC believes that rigorous research into personal experiences of serious illness resulting in admission to intensive care is an important part of this work. Providing access to the experiences of patients, families and close friends who have already come to terms with the realities of intensive care (both during and after the patient stay) may help others.
ICNARC funded two DIPEx website modules investigating both patients' experiences and the experiences of family and close friends (http://www.healthtalkonline.org/Intensive_care/). These modules also provide a valuable training resource for staff new to the intensive care unit.
DIPEx is a charity and research group based at the University of Oxford. The DIPEx website has won several high profile awards and commendations, regularly features in the media as an example of good information on the Internet and is a recommended resource for BBC health features.
