Step 5: Next steps

  • Communicate the treatment allocation to bedside staff

Remember, this allocation is a platelet transfusion threshold for low bleeding risk procedures only

The threshold applies to the initial, randomised procedure and any subsequent procedures deemed low bleeding risk until critical care discharge

  • Prescribe as appropriate

If the platelet count is below the allocated threshold, one unit of platelets should be transfused prior/during a low bleeding risk invasive procedure

If the platelet count is above the allocated threshold, do not transfuse with platelets for a low bleeding risk invasive procedure

  • Document threshold for low bleeding risk invasive procedures in the medical notes
  • Leave documents at bedside as a reminder, e.g., bedside poster displaying allocated threshold

Posters are provided to research teams, these may be available on your unit within a research ‘grab pack’
